Can someone tell me what the advantage is of a compact crank with 50/34 compared to a standard crank with 53/39.

1. Lower gearing
or
2. lighter weight with equivalent gearing (less chain, smaller cassette, lighter chainrings).
Assuming you are comparing a 53/39 w/12-27 to 50/34 w/11-23 the savings in chain would amount to the difference you'd need to size a 53T and 27T compared to a 50T and a 23T.
