  1. Whew, just got back from a meeting. This is going to be really cool for our
    club.
I am friends with an instructor in the Natural Resources Dept of the local
community college. She teaches surveying and beginner GIS stuff. Her class
does lab time out in the field.

The club's pet project, the city park we adopted that is pretty much the
sole domain of mountain bikers, has no maps. Even the parks dept isn't sure
where the boundaries are. So, we've got it worked out for the surveying
class to do a multi layered map as their lab for this semester. We'll get
layered GIS type data that will include property lines, buildings, roads,
trails, outcrops, stunts and elevation data. For free. It's a cool deal,
they need projects that don't compete with commercial enterprises, the city
has no money for mapping and therefore relies on volunteer stuff. Best of
all the property in question is literally just a few miles (2?) from the
    campus.
