Cosmic Carbone rolling resistance?

  1. I just purchased a pair of Mavic Cosmic Carbone wheels for my road bike.
    The first thing I noticed is that the wheel (front), when spun by hand, does
    not seem to spin nearly as freely as my other wheels. It will come to a
    stop much sooner and have absolutely no roll-back when stopping. I can put
    two bikes side-by-side and spin both wheels, as close as possibly with the
    same amount of force, and the Campy wheel will spin much longer and have one
    or two roll-backs. Even if the Mavic was perfectly balanced, it still does
    not seem to descend as fast as my other wheels. I can tell this because I
    ride with the same partner all the time and usually along a lot of the same
    routes. This gives us a pretty good frame of reference. Yes, I have
    adjusted the hubs to the point at which they as loose as possible, without
    reaching the stage where there is play.

    I guess my question is this: Is there anyone else with these wheels that
    have seen the same results. Is the hub going to have a "break-in" period
    after which it might be freer. Is seems like it might just be the bearing
    seals that are creating the resistance, but I thought I'd ask the question.
    I appreciate any ideas or comments.

    It's how it behaves when loaded that matters. Do a rolldown test off a
    slight gradient (e.g. a bridge approach) if you're worried.

  3. I've owned Carbones since 1989... their bearings are remarkable. Very
    smooth, very silky, much precision without run-in req'd.

    Send them back to Mavic, this will give you an objective frame of
    reference as to the quality for which you have paid.

    are draggy when compared to loose balls ala Campagnolo.

    ya said it all. They will get a wee bit smoother but you will have more
    problems with the really draggy rear hub, BUT in the grand sheme of
    things it is barely measureable when you are riding these. Their weight
    is much more of a disadvantage than the smoothness but that too is
    teeny.
