It will be a year before the patient knows how much he will recover. He still doesn't know for sure
which interstitial lung disease made him ill. Strange narrowed it down to two possibilities, but the
treatment for both is steroids, and he is already on them. So at this point, his doctor is not
recommending a biopsy with the surgery and hospital stay required to narrow it further. The patient
is not taking anything right now for his cholesterol. He and his doctor suspect that an allergic
reaction to Lipitor triggered his illness, though they can't be sure. He will need a medicine -- a
new one -- for his cholesterol. But that's in the future. For now, he's glad just to be getting
better: ''If it's a long, slow total recovery, well, I can live with that.''
