ive tryed ATAC's and shimano SPD's before, i liked the times but want to try something different, and in my opinion the shimano ones are **** so theyre going and i think ill try out the candys or possibly the egg beaters

if i get the candys ill get the red Ti's and if the egg beaters the Ti up to 3Ti depending on the price i can get them for.

i havent looked but i suspect i might have the chop some of the tread off my specialised shoes for them to fit the candys, anyone had any experience with similar shoes and the pedals ?

Egg beaters are great, especially in muddy conditions when SPDs become a nightmare. And they're light too. I've got the Stainless Steel model, by far the best value in the range.

I think the crank bros pedals look good for MTB use because it looks like it would be hard to clog them up with mud. However, if you ever just jump on your bike for a quick trip to the store and don't want to have to get out your bike shoes, the crank bros pedals would not provide much of a surface for regular shoes to push.

yeah.. im not worried about that i think iill get the egg beaters, at least the Sl ones, ill see how much i can get them for when the rep comes into work next

Been riding crank bros for awhile (Mallets) and the mechanism/release/retention/etc has been excellent. They were a bit of a pain to get "broke-in" but otherwise they have been reliable and great performers. Like you mentioned, many folks have had to trim shoes to make everything work as it should. Tough thing is you won't know until you mate the shoes to pedals. It's easy enough to do.

I've used them for about a year now(candies and the reg. eggbeaters). I do like them alot except, the brass cleats wear out quick, and then it cost another 20.00 bucks to replace them. SPD's have great wear life, but do clog up in the mud. They all have there benifits.

yeah the smiano cleats are forged steel instead of brass, i had some time ATAC pedals whch were real good, they had brass cleats and lasted quite a long time but i dont know anyone with crank bros pedals so i dont know how long they last
im gonna order them tommorow, hopefully the Ti if the supplier has them in stock

wooh ! i got my eggbeaters - Ti's, theyre damn good, just been riding around the road a bit today and going mountain biking tomorrow, the only thing i think could be a problem with them is as mentioned - the wearing of the cleats but im not too worried.

i also got a new x gen. SRAM front deraleur and its soo much better than the deore one that i had on there, it actually shifts smoothly, i think it looks ugly but thats just me and as long as it works im happy

MY Atacs have brasss cleats. Theyve been on there a year and half and still have some life left. This is with 2-3 days riding a week. Can't say they wear any more than any other pedal I have seen. I also just ordered some Candy's for my Tri Bike. Looking forward to seeing how that goes. If it doesnt work out, I'll have back ups in case my ATACs ever die.

Egg beaters and non-platform pedals are great for their lightweight- if the terrain you ride lets you stay clicked in. When things get technical and sometimes scary, I unclip and put my shoe on the cage. Shimano 545's work good for me .

Problem solved with the candys or even Time ATACs plenty of pedal surface area for me to put my foot. But I prefer to stay clipped in. Haven't come across too much in the way of XC riding that scared me so much that I wouldnt stay clipped in. I think if it was that scary, I would walk.

I have been using the Candy C's for 12 months/ 10 K km and found them an excellent pedal. Last weekend one of the pedals capar with the platform and beater separating from the main shaft and I needed a rebuild kit to repair the pedal. In Melbourne where I live, the rebuild kit was not stocked locally and had to be obtained from the Sydney distributor ( a few days wait), so I would recommend (if you can afford it ) to get a rebuilt kit at the same time, or make sure that your stockist has them to avoid delays due to getting parts if needed in a hurry.

i found with the eggbeaters if i unclip i can put the front of the cleat infront of the pedals back wing part and it will stay theyre without moving around so i can pedal and have my weight on the pedals without unclipping

i personally dont see the point in the candy, theres not really much of a platform and its only a plastic anyway so i cant see your shoes gripping to it very well

If I were you I would get the candy sl's because they are very tough and they have not failed me yet. I can clip in even when my cleat is completely covered in mud. They are also not as expesive to replace

too late i like the eggbeaters myself cause i dont see the point in the tiny 'platform' on the candys

and im not worried about expense, if they break ill probly get some ATAC's but i doubt ill manage to break them lol.

I think Crank Bros needs to publish a "trimming guide" with the Mallets.

I foolishly took a big knife and trimmed from the cleat outward. THIS was a big mistake. The Mallet is concave. Your trim needs to allow the EDGES of the platform up into shoes sole, not the cleat itself.

I'll know better with the next pair of shoes. Altogether the Mallet is probably the BEST platform out there that allows you to still ride sans cleats.

The best egg-beater feature is probably the four sided entry. You can clip in without worrying about the pedal orientation.

On the Mallet, this actually translates into difficulty NOT clipping in ;-)

I picked up a set of Speedplay Frogs http://www.speedplay.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.frog last saturday and was completly disappointed with them, The first time I used them some of the plastic which keeps the cleat from spinning around on the pedal broke off. I took them back to the local bike shop and they traded me for a set of Crank Brothers Candy C's. I only had a chance last night to try them out for about 10 minutes but I am very impressed even bran new they were still easy to clip in and out of (Apparently this will get easier the more I use them).

I am very excited to give them a full work out tonight when I get off work.

hell yeah theyre awesome pedals, after a while the cleat will wear in and it'll be super easy to get in and out of and the float will get a bit smoother (i found mine was a bit stiff for a little while - that could've been the plastic on the bottom of the shoe though)

Well I had a chance to use them on a trail yesterday they work flawlessly, I was totaly impressed with them. The clipped in and out easy and stayed cliped in during some tough climbs, right up until my chain broke on my bike oh well. off to the bike shop for a new chain.
