I'm about to assemble a new high-end road bike for the first time in about 8
years. I haven't kept up with the newer componentry.
The frame is probably about 4-5 years old and I'll be putting mostly campy
record components on it.
I'm told that the newer external cup Bottom-bracket/crank combos will still
work fine with older frames, but it is a good idea to have a matching front
derailleur made to work with the new cranks. ...and presumably a
different/older derailleur if I put on a older crank.
I was thinking about getting an "upgrade group" that does not come with a
crank/BB and then getting one of the older campy record cranks that are
considerably less expensive. ...but someone told me that this might not be a
good idea because the front derailleur won't necessarily be made to line up
properly with the older crank.
Does this sound correct? I'm not sure that it does.
