A correlative analysis of the human carotid bifurcation by B-mode ultrasound, angiography, and
pathological examination of endarterectomy specimens was performed in 900 patients from which 216
endarterectomy specimens were available. Only a modest correlation existed between the two imaging
techniques for absolute measurements of lesions. Ultrasound showed best correlation with lesion
thickness and angiography correlated best with minimal lumen. Ultrasound was superior to angiography
for quantifying atherosclerotic plaque.
