Cycling and fractured metatarsal

Has anyone had problems with their metatarsals when cycling? I
fractured my second metatarsal in February when cross-country skiing
although it wasn't diagnosed until May... Bt then it had almost healed
itself but I was told it would be weak for up to 9 months so not to
overdo the hiking in the summer. Instead of that I spent a lot of time
cycling in the alps - the foot was fine but has recently started
really playing up even on easy, flat routes. Just turning the pedals
really hurts. If anyone has any suggestions or advice I'd be grateful.

I've tried that - supposed to rest apparently....

Had it been the question of possible metatarsal trouble from cycling
alone, or even running, I'd have said try a new pair of shoes and make
sure they are the correct size and the laces are not too tight. But the
fact that you've had a break makes my opinion even flakier than normal.

When I started proper long distance (running) training, I had what I
thought was a metatarsal break; it wasn't. Just overuse.

The injury really hurt; and ached when inactive. But it went away after
a week's rest (plus, incidentally, some cycling which I prescribed for
myself). The only reason I rested is because I thought I'd do real harm.

Swimming for a week?

Yes, I prescribed cycling for myself as a "rest" from hiking over the
summer... but obviously overdone it. Swimming or sleeping might work.
I'm just a bit worried it is going to keep playing up..... it needs to
be healed so I can go skiing on it again in December.

Specialist doctor people.

When I raced motorbikes off road I was enjoying a fairly successful season
when I fell off injuring my thumb and the fleshy part beneath. Birmingham
Sports Injury Clinic didn't tell me that motorbikes were dangerous, they
asked "when's your next race?". These people were not of the give it up
persuasion, they wanted to get me back to my sport. I reported almost daily
(eveningly?) for assorted treatments and they did the trick.

I don't know if the NHS still has such clinics - but in my experience they
were damn good.

Do you use cycling-specific shoes? I'm no expert on injuries but I'd
imagine the stiffer your soles, the better.

Not cycling specific shoes - that might help... but I do have very
stiff soled shoes. Apparently wearing that type of the shoe was the
only reason that I managed to walk on the broken foot for months and
heal the bone straight without wrecking it.
