Nous étions jeunes et insouciants, or "We were young and carefree". I think it has been translated into English.

I second "The Rider" by Tim Krabbe. His descriptions of the experience of riding a cycling road race were like getting inside the head of an "average" but serious road racer. It's been 30 years since I've ridden even a criterium, but it was like re-living my early years racing. It's an amazing book, and not just because its about cycling! It comes close to being literature, if that doesn't put you off, and I sincerely hope it doesn't!

+3 Krabbe's The Rider. Just stay away from Wiggo's borefest.

Domestique by Charlie Wegelius is high on my list and seems very interesting. Anyone read it?
