Hello,

I'm a 25 year old doctor from england and looking to take a break from my career by cycling down the east coast for charity with one of my colleagues.

We aim to start our trip in September 2014 and we have absolutely no idea where to start. Our rough plan is to cycle from portland to miami over two to three months.

Has anyone planned a trip like this before that could perhaps offer us some pointers on where to start?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated,
James

I have NEVER done an east coast trip so the advice I'm giving you is just from internet knowledge that can probably help you to some degree.

The first place to start is at Adventure Cycling, see: http://www.adventurecycling.org/ They have a wealth of information on any type of touring trip you can think of, and they have forum where you can surly get the info you're looking for; they also sell maps that are the foremost touring maps found anywhere for US travels. The one you probably want is the Atlantic coast series, see: http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/adventure-cycling-route-network/atlantic-coast/ Simply select the 1 through 7 and see which ones cover all the areas you want to go. Their maps include a wealth of information on them like where campsites are, bike friendly hotels and the such, places to get food, water, restrooms, and even bike shops, so you always know where the nearest facility is to your position.

Then there are other resources too you can read that will help you to prepare like the book The Essential Touring Cyclist: A Complete Guide for the Bicycle Traveler, Second Edition (The Essential Series); websites like: http://www.phred.org/~alex/kenkifer/www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/ and others.

Might also look for http://www.crazyguyonabike.com , for similar tales of tours. You may have to leaf through a few pages of journals to get to some Eastern Seaboard stuff.
