Cyclist killed during Moulamein ride
Tuesday, 30 May 2006. 14:15 (AEDT)

A 39-year-old Moulamein man was hit by a utility and killed last night while cycling with a friend.

Deniliquin police are yet to release the man's name.

A spokesman for New South Wales police media says the two cyclists were riding on Swan Hill Road in Moulamein at 6:10pm AEST when the accident happened.

The spokesman says both cyclists were wearing reflective vests.

He says one rider swerved to avoid the utility, but the 39-year-old man was hit and killed.

Albury crime scene detectives were called to the scene.

The 24-year-old driver of the ute, who is also from Moulamein, has been spoken to by police and released pending further inquiries.

Police say he returned a negative breath test.

I can't believe this, they are almost just starting to come along every second day at the moment. :(

Chill out, unfortunately sometimes a cluster of incidents do seem to occur too regularly for comfort. I am sincerely not trying to belittle or downplay what has occured, but please don't allow stuff like this to needlessly add to the fear factor. Putting events into perspective, have a gander at the Vic & NSW road stats. Sadly, it's still other road users wiping themselves out. Cyclists want respect and awareness, and we should also actively monitor whats really going on.

Farkenell, I reckon 3/162 (1.8%) is quite a lot. Time we fought back!
Need ideas on how to be lethal on a bike ... anyone?

Congratulations. Astronomers have detected pressure waves whose frequency
is something like 57 octaves below middle C in the core of another
galaxy, but you've found a lower tone than that. - Steve VanDevender

Cyclist fatalities are slightly up from the same time last year in both states though.

More alarming must be the significant increased in passenger fatalities (70-75% in both states). Have they changed the reporting method, or is there really an increase of that magnitude?

I tried ramming one side on today, but all I got was a sore shoulder, a buckled front wheel, and a bill for a new wing mirror :|. Perhaps I'll try going through the windshield next time, an errant SPD pedal could cause some damage...

keep a metal bike pump handy...always useful...

happily we have many more cyclists on our roads and laneways, but the inevitable statistical certainty is that numbers of injuries and fatalities may increase over past years, but I would expect the % of total riders suffering injuries or worse, should drop with forceful advocacy and the resulting much higher awareness...

it's just getting the raised awareness bit through the thick heads of so many motorists, politicians and rule makers...

that's our challenge...keep heaving and huffing...we'll get through their defences...never give up...never give up...never give up

Noooo. The image cost would be too high. The headlines: "Weird
human-powered wheeled machine operator dismembers car". I much prefer
"Cycle-terrorist strikes back".

If the door is more than 1m off the ground then go under it!

hmm... "weird human-powered wheeled machine" operator. "weird human"
powered wheeled machine operator. weird "human-powered wheeled
machine operator".

Yeah, all those work!
