Not just in the States but Canada too:

CBC SPORTS ONLINE - On a day when all of Canada prepared for an expected
gold medal, Lori-Ann Muenzer provided the unexpected. The 38-year-old
Muenzer, who trains in Edmonton, became the first Canadian woman to win gold
in cycling at the Athens Games.
For that accomplishment she was named Female Athlete of the Year in a survey
by Broadcast News and The Canadian Press on Monday...

Dude,

Nobody pays any attention to these sports polls. That Canadian girl is
a nobody when she won the gold, and a nobody today. You will never see
her on TV, and nobody stops her in the mall and says, "Hey, aren't you
that big fat track racer who beat a bunch of other nobodies on the
Athens velodrome?"

Take care,

Oh look, a North American who fantasizes about being a European, so he
calls himself Eurodog.

Talk about xenophilia.

actually, she's one of probably less than 100 cyclists currently riding
worldwide who can actually claim to have won something worth winning.
she may not be hawking energizer batteries but--unlike all masters, all
d3s, and really, anyone racing in the usa--she is a legitimate cycling
champion. she went up against the world's best and beat them.

OK, but I was really thinking a figure eight with a common center. The
over-under takes away from the excitement.

Sorry to rain on your parade that you are having in your own mind for
her 'win.' But winning that event is like winning a gold medal in hay
bailing on a farm in Idaho.

I wouldn't know that girl if I walked past her in a mall even though I
just looked at her photo 2 minutes ago.

Just because she "won" let's not get gay about WHAT she won. And what
she won was an illusion. She won a meaningless event in the sport.

Lance never won no gold meal and everybody knows who he is. That's
because he won something real. Your girl won a fake competition. Nobody
cares about it.

She would have been better off staying at home and baking a cake.

no it's not. it's a gold medal in a worldwide competition, against the
best of the best. if the pool isn't deep, so what? she, on that day in
athens, was the best in the world at her event.
if you want to attack the event, fine. Either give Ms. Muenzer her due
admiration or leave her alone.

"I wouldn't know that girl if I walked past her in a mall even though I

How many nobel prize winners could you recognize?

"Just because she "won" let's not get gay about WHAT she won. And what

masters racing is an illusion. hour records you don't need to train for
are an illusion. all d3 races are an illusion. a gold medal is about as
real as it gets. even more so if you hold down a job while traiing and
racing.

"Lance never won no gold meal and everybody knows who he is. That's
because he won something real. Your girl won a fake competition. Nobody

cares about it."

general population recognition as an importance barometer is dangerous
ground, mostly because of the population. more people know who won the
world series than know who the name of the secretary of defense.

"She would have been better off staying at home and baking a cake."
i like cake.

For what you're envisioning, the flying cross-over definitely isn't the
way to go. It's gotta be on the same plane.
