Anything is good, apart from off-the shelf 'boutique' wheels, which will
be damaged quickly, and you'll get a big repair bill.
I've just built a couple up for the coming season, just got the cheapest
rims from a discount bin, one a semi deep CXP14, the other a MA3. The
hubs are at least 8 years old, and probably Mirage, 8 sp.
DIY cost me ~£75 for the pair to build them up on my existing hubs.
Just make sure they are tensioned correctly, or they will be ruined
pretty quickly.
The thinking behind deep/semi-deep rims is that they are stronger, so
able to take the knocks better, as well as being better at mud
clearance, and not collecting as much mud in bad conditions.I know this
is true, as I've had to stop before due to so much mud stuck to the
inside of the rim, between the spoke heads. Deep rims are much better at
clearing this mud away.
