    Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

    8 ounces pitted dates -- coarsely chopped
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1 tablespoon margarine
    1 cup boiling water
    1 egg
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1/3 cup vegetable oil
    1 cup sugar
    1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    1 cup walnuts

    Pour boiling water over dates, baking soda, and margarine. Let set for
    10-15 minutes. Blend together egg, salt, oil, sugar, and flour. Add date
    mixture; mix well. Fold in walnuts. Pour into loaf pan. Bake at 350 F
    for 35-45 minutes. While stir warm, pour corn syrup over date nut bread.
