Hi, I've been looking for a second hand hybrid bike, such as a Trek
7.5 or a Specialized Sirrus but have chanced upon a place selling
2007 Dawes Discovery 601s for £400 inc postage.

Given that it's got 105 rear mech etc it seems good value but don't
know much really about dawes build quality etc. Also dawes website
doesn't say too much about the frame.

I'm basically looking for a bike that I can do long distance cycle
rides on, such as cycling holidays etc.

Any info and advice greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Gavin.

For my money you'd do better with the Revolution Country Traveller
from Edinburgh Cycles. This bike came out very well in CyclingPlus'
2007 bike round-up against stiff (and expensive) opposition. Dawes
make decent enough bikes but you'd be riding the connoisseur's choice
without breaking your budget. A no-brainer really.

Note that most (all?) of Edinburgh Bikes own brand bikes are actually
made by Dawes anyway.
The Revolution Country Traveller is probably good value, but its quite a
different sort of bike from the Discovery 601. For a start, it has drop
bars. And it has a rack and mudguard at standard, but the transmission
is Acera and 2200, which is several levels below 105.

The Discovery 601 does look good value for £400, if that's the sort of
bike you want. Dawes are usually reasonable quality, the frame is
probably fairly standard 6061 or 7005 aluminium.
Though if you are planning long distance rides its worth considering
drop bars, and a rack if you want to carry anything.

I ran a 601 discovery in 2006 and did about 5000 miles on it including a trip
from Mulhouse down the Rhein to Rotterdam ( with a side trip up and down the
Mosel) then back home via the York cycle show. ( see my website for pictures
and diary)
I had it fitted with "butterfly" handlebars as an extra and towed a bob yak
trailer. It did me very well . It is still going strong in the hands of a new
owner ( he has had it for about a year -- when I sold it after buying my Raven
Tour ( with Rohloff)). He did a LEJOG sometime last year on it and what very
happy with it then.

I liked it and I had had a Dawes 501 discovery before that

But doesn't compare with my Thorn Raven tour -- but to be fair it is a tad
more expensive!

I saw that Evans currently has the Dawes Horizon at £375 (RRP £450) just
now, I have one, I'm pretty sure it's practically the same bike as the
Edinburgh Revolution Country (Sora/Alivio)

Further to Craig's reply I contacted the Edinburgh Cycle Co-operative
to ask for any comments and here is their prompt reply:

Hi Bill,

In the past our Country bikes were made in the Dawes factory. Our new
Explorer and Traveller Country bikes are made along with the rest of
our bikes in the far east from a high quality manufacturing company.
I did hear the other day a quite scary fact though. Apparently to
make our entire years supply of revolution bikes takes the company
less than a day. That's a pretty speedy process! It turns out this
is the case for almost all factory built bikes. Imagine how many
bikes there must be out there! Thanks for your email and thanks for
your support.

Kind Regards

It was very nice of them to take the time to respond I thought, I had
no idea about the link with Dawes.
