I rode 50 mi. on Sat. (only been training for a month now) - today I tried to go out and nail up a quick 10mi. and my HR shot up to 160 and legs felt awful. Obviously I wasn't back to normal - how long should I have waited?

I have found that barring actual injury recovery time it is best to do some sort of riding the day after any brutal workout. If I've hurt a something below the waist...ie something that would be hurt worse by riding I'll take a little time off...but if its just muscle pain RIDE and Stretch seams to work best for me. Even If I can't keep a reasonable pace I'll ride to get the blood flowing in the legs.

Not sure what you mean by "today I tried to go out and nail up a quick 10mi." but it sound like you didn't take it easy. Did you not ride yesterday (Sunday)?

I hardly ever take a day off completely (no riding), but for one or two days after a hard ride, I ride very easy miles -- never letting the HR get above recovery rate. But I think it is advantageous to get back on the bike and get blood flowing through those muscles and loosen them up.

I took a day off (next time I won't). I'll try for more recovery rides - I guess the first is the worst.
