I finally narrowed down my choices to these two bikes for strictly home to work ride.
Which one of these two has better parts and components for durability and reliability, Bike 1 or Bike 2 ?
Both seems to ride fine while Bike 1 is more upright. It doesn't really matter to me since it's for short ride. Price difference is only $20, Bike 2 costs $20 more than Bike 1. I'd like better parts. What do you think?

At that price point the different brands are pretty similar as far as quality of parts/value. Go with the bike that fits better and that you like better (looks, color, etc...).

You might consider upgrading either bike to clipless pedals, even for commuting.

i have no preference to either as far as the looks, the crossroads seat is softer and more comfortable than the trek's hard saddle.

I guess nobody knows about the components on these two bikes.

7200, for me, the components are just that bit better.

In the pix the 7200 looks more balanced, also, have a look at the Sirrus (Specialised) or the Trek 1200 Flat Bar Road...

I choise the Specialized Crossroad Elite, and my wife chose the Trek 7200. My wife liked the shifters on the Trek better, and I liked the shifters on the Specialized better and the the fact that the tension on the fork and seatpost suspension on the Specialized were adjustable (I way 250 lbs, and bottomed out the Trek suspension, and the tension could not be adjusted). Both of us are very pleased with our selections. The same LBS carried both bikes, so that did not play into our decision. Our bikes are 2004 models, these specific differences may not exist on the 2005 or 2006 models.

It's hard to find the trek 7200 for my size (about 17"), they do have the small one; nobody seems to have the crossroads in my size either.
I've been looking for them for a week!

I ended up going with 2006 Specialized Sirrus. about $600 out of the door and comes with free tune up for a year.

I think you'l be pleased with the Sirrus. I had a Trek 7100 for about a month last summer and traded it in for a Sirrus Elite. I have 3000 miles on the Sirrus and commute 25 miles 4 or 5 days a week on it. I finally got a road bike this year for longer rides, but had no problem doing 50 or 60 miles on the Sirrus. Good Luck!
