I've seen the AIS and VIS kids rolling around with their SRM's. They sure go fast. I wonder if this could do the trick for me:

Hmmm... might be depressing to actually find out how far off I am. Maybe should just keep saving for that new set of legs. :)

You can get the PT hub and computer on its own and build it into a
decent wheel for a lot less than that reserve price.

Where from/what kind of wheel? I might actually be able to afford it then. :) Oh for a sponsor/not being a student...

You can pick up a hub and computer on ebay for around $1200 AUD. It's
still a lot of money ... but it's a lot less than buying a zipp 303
wheelset with the hub built into it.

Will it help make you faster, or just be a nice toy? That's the
question ... :)

Is the hub and computer for $1200 from ebay or a dealer, here or the
US? Is there an Australian dealer? I've never seen them in shops and
was thinking about buying from the US. If you get it for $1200 for hub
and computer, you still need to buy wheels and spokes, which is going
to be about $300+ even for really average wheels and a build. The
cheapest I've seen for 303's was $1500 second hand and they retail for
$2500 and up. Compare to a polar s720 (~$500+) and a set of race wheels
($1000-$1500), which doesn't have power (or it costs $750 more to get
the inaccurate polar power setup). I mean, if you want the cheapest
powertap setup possible, you're definitely right that you could go a
different avenue but I don't think it's the bad deal you make it sound
like. Especially since you get front and back race wheels. It's more a
good deal if you have the money to spend on toys and far too expensive
for everyone else. I had a mate (triathlete) who just got a Dura-ace
SRM imported and that set him back $5300. It's a bargain compared to
that.

Will it make you faster or will it be a fun toy? It will probably make
it faster if you take the time to learn to use it properly and be a toy
if you treat it as such.

I should also have said their used to be an Australian distributor (British
International) but I don't think they are importing any more.

I've got a polar power meter.

Let me assure you the novelty wears off pretty quickly.

Does it work at both poles?

I'll take it if you don't want it!

My understanding was that the Polar monitor had serious setup and accuracy issues as compared to the Powertap or SRM, which are both +/- ~2% if set up properly. Did you notice erratic data or have problems with setup? It seems the Polar power unit is extremely expensive for something that may or may not work.

And as far as the 'novelty wearing off', how did you use it/what were you training for? I'm thinking it's no good to just stare at the numbers, but it would be useful for prescribing and monitoring interval intensity, tracking progress and tracking cumulative training load. You didn't find that?

Completely off topic, but Tim, that is a great quote!

1.5% supposedly for powertap.
I know 2 people with polar power but both have given up due to inaccuracies.
