Deore XT Rear Derailleur

I am going to upgrade some of the components on my specialized stumpjumper.
I was looking at the Deore XT Rear Derailleur. My question is do I want the
RD-M760-GS or the RD-M760-SGS? Does this all depend on the cassette I
choose?

In general, the GS is for tighter drivetrainss (it supposedly has a tighter
range) and it is supposed to shift more crisply. For some reason it
sometimes is priced higher than the longer SGS model.

Given my druthers, I'd hunt for a M750 derailleur if you're using rapidfire
shifters. The 760 has a reversed spring mech (pushing the derailleur up
onto larger cogs rather than pulling it down to smaller ones.) Currently
this is referred to as "Low Normal" though in the past it was called "Rapid
Rise." It's intended to work best with the new integrated shift/brake
levers. Stockpiles of the older, conventional design are starting to dry
up, but they work better with the older type shifters.

It has to do with chain wrap capacity. To calculate this take the
difference in the big and little cog in the rear and add it to the
difference between the big and small ring in the front. If this number is
greater than the capacity of the GS get the SGS. Basically if you only run
two rings up front go with the GS if you run all three you'll need the SGS
longer cage. You can run the mid cage with a triple setup but only if your
oxygen and glycogen starved brain can remember not to shift into the big/big
combo. ;^)

You can get all the tech info on the derailleurs from
