Derailler Adjustments

I have a few questions regarding shifting and Front and Rear Derailler set up.

I have Campy Record on a Scott CR1, which doesn't have barrel adjusters.

I seem to remember that when I first had the bike built, the big chainring would shift with one lever stroke/paddle release, up or down and now it seems like there is all sorts of play and it requires several lever strokes or paddle depresses to get aligned properly (no rubbing).

After trying to adjust it myself, I find it shifts worse.

First, is there a certain sequence for adjusting the front and rear deraillers?

I have been experiencing two issues:
+some rub on the front derailler when I am in the small chainring and the large cog (climbing set up). After trying to adjust it, I think it shifts worse.
+some clicking in certain cogs in the back - like it wants to jump gears.

I prefer to have a shop work on it but the turn around time is always several days to a week in my area.
