I have a short cage XT derailleur on a road bike. The cage says 28t max, 28t capacity.
I am running a 48/38/28 and 11-28 on back. 37t.
Everything is fine except when on the 28 up front and I go to the smaller 4 rear cogs (8 speed setup). Then the rear derailleur can't wrap without the chain rolling across the upper pulley.
So I don't do that 🙂 Which isn't a problem at all- these gears are for bailouts only and I only use the largest three cogs when I am on the 28 up front. This isn't mountain biking where shifting up front can be a problem.
Is there something I am missing here? Could any double/short cage/SS rear derailleur be used like this? Am I asking for trouble in any way other than not using the smaller cogs with the smallest chainwheel?
I ask because I want to replace the rear derailleur- age and alignment- and have found a couple of nice, used short cage Ultegras.

Works fine for me. Most of this year so far, I ran a short-cage Shimano 105 rear derailer with a 30-42-52 x 11-27 setup.

Ought to work fine. You may lose a couple more gear combinations, as the "short cage" road vs. "short cage" mtb derailers may have different length cages. -- Rick Onanian

Yeah, I'd imagine you'd have some trouble with that. I have used this kind of set-up, and I have used a longer rear derailleur. I see no downside to the longer derailleur. It shifts just fine. Obviously you know the problems with the short one -- minor, yes, but you may drop a chain if you shift into these gears accidentally. This is far better than making it too tight in the big-big combination, which can break your derailleur when you shift into it by mistake.
