Hello, I need to buy a new headset for an older bike. How do I determine the right size to purchase
(headtube diameter and stack height)? Also, will a 7/8-speed front derailler work on a 9-speed bike
(dual not triple)? Thanks, -B

with a tape measure. head tube dia. is the with across the steerer tube. stack height: measure the
total lenght of the headtube Including the headset, than measure just the headtunbe lenght -
subtract later from former = stack height.

Your best bet is to go to your LBS (Local Bike Shop) and tell them what you have.

As for your derailleur, common consensus here is that it doesn't matter. As long as your shift lever
is the right type for the number of gears you'r shifting (and is compatible with the derailleur, of
course), it should work fine.

May you have the wind at your back. And a really low gear for the hills! Chris
