A 21-rider contingent of developmental American cyclists kicked off the North American road season this weekend as USA Cycling sent four junior athletes to the Tour of the Bahamas and formally embarked on its partnership with VMG Racing. Seventeen of the 18 athletes on the USA Cycling National Development Team - including the eight riders that will compete in the upcoming AMGEN Tour of California - began their season competing under the VMG banner. Sheldon Deeny placed second in Sunday's road race, while Brent Bookwalter was the top development rider in the overall classification in 13th.
