Hello, I am trying to figure out the proper way for a
diabetic or pre-diabetic person to eat for a school health
paper. According to the "Diabetes Food Pyramid" linked on
the front page of the American Diabetes Association (diabetes.orgnutrition andOpen ↗
recipes/nutrition/foodpyramid.jsp) we should be eating
"more servings of grains, beans, and starchy vegetables
than of any of the other foods", but it also says on the
same page that "gram for gram, sugars, like table sugar, do
not raise blood glucose any more quickly than do other
carbohydrates, like potatoes, rice or pasta". I was
wondering how eating all of that sugar helps people who
suffer from high blood sugar.
Also, I was wondering why they say you should eat less
sweets, if they have the same metabolic effect as all of
those healthy starches (also from the same page: Eat more
starches! It is healthiest for everyone to eat more whole
grains, beans, and starchy vegetables). I guess its because
they don't have all of the nutrients? What if you just take
a multi-vitamin with a glass of Cool-Aid? It seems as if
that would be just as healthy as a Pasta and Potato dinner.
Anyway, thanks for the help. It is confusing stuff to a non-
diabetic...
