If it doesn't already have clipless pedals, then I'd go for those before replacing anything else...

Next, I wouldn't worry too much about replacing anything on the bike, but spending money on other equipment. Quality gear, especially for riding in cold/wet weather or riding at night, makes riding more enjoyable than spending dough on upgrading (say) to an Ultegra drivetrain.

Oh ok, yes i did get clipless pedals thrown in with the bike and i bought a pair of sidi road shoes which were worth about 220 AUD for about 99 AUD in a huge clearance sale....

If i was to begn riding prior to school i would have to get up relatively early and it would still be rather dark, what equipment is needed for riding in low light conditions (such as lighting clothing etc)

Lights come in two flavours, those which make you visible to others and
those that actually show you where you're going. That means you end up
buying either quite cheap lights or very expensive rechargeable ones because
anything inbetween is a waste of money. I use a cheap Polaris front light

red rear.

For clothing something simple like a Netti Hexagon windproof jacket or vest

light, cheap and you can be seen for miles. I have a red one because I
