did i get a good bike?

For the money you got a great bike - one that I would have been tickled to get if I was just getting into serious cycling. The number one factor for speed is not the bike anyway. Its the engine that's propelling it.

Use this bike to learn everything you can about cycling and when you get the big bucks, you'll know exactly which high-end bike you'll want and make a very intelligent, informed decision - one that is optimized for you.

One of the most important things to consider when attempting to ascertain the value of your bike is the frame. Trek does an excellent job with it's entry-level frames. Your Pilot 1.0 uses Alpha SL aluminum. This is the same material that is used on the Trek 1000, 1200, 1500 and Pilot 1.2. The difference lies in the components.
What's great about the Pilot 1.0 and 1000 is that, for an entry-level price, you get a frame that has already proven its worth when paired with higher-end componentry. This means that as you progress as a rider, your component groups can progess aswell, without having to shell out the money for a whole new bike.
Only two short years ago, the 1000 still came with an Alpha aluminum frame. The SuperLight is a vast improvement. Classic trickle-down. Your bike also has a double rear triangle configuration; this is far more comfortable than the wishbone connections of years past.
The next area of examination is the drivetrain. The 1.0's mix of Shimano Sora, Tiagra and 2203 components is sturdy. You can put a lot of miles on this machine with the proper maintenance. You may not be winning the Dauphine this week, but it doesn't sound like that is your goal. Good ways to improve your drivetrain in the future are Shimano 105 and Ultegra components. Your frame was designed to match them, and they will work wonderfully.
This brings us to the only portion of the 1.0/ 1000 line that I do care for. The wheels. A bike may only be as good as the engine that powers it, but the engine can be severly hampered by the only part of the bike that touches the ground. Alex wheels are notoriously heavy with high resistence hubs, this will help you build up your legs. If you ever change wheels, you may feel as though you had been training with a parachute attached to the back of your cycle. Alex wheels are also infamous for spoke breakage. If you come to the realization in a few month that your spokes are breaking left and right, and your wheels are often coming untrue, a smart solution is to look for a new set of wheels. Bontrager sells its select and race wheels throught the Trek website, or you may be able to find them at your Local Bike Store. Mavic also makes a superb wheel. The Aksium, Ksyrium Equipe, or Open would be right at home on your bike.
Last but not least, the Bontrager select tire. I have had terrible personal luck with this tire. They go flat in an instant. One of the best ways to be truly happy about your ride, is to know that it will get you safely back home. Get a tire with better puncture resistence, or start carring a patch kit and pump. The selects on Alex wheels seem to pinch a lot for some reason as well.
Overall, you made great choice. Trek makes one of the best bike around, and I prefer their entry-level bike to Giant's OCR 3, Specialized's Allez, and Cannondale's R500.
