difference between derailleur shifter and hub gear shifters?

Hi,

I did search but can't find anything on this topic. Is there any difference between derailleur shifters and hub gear shifters?


I was hoping to use a Shimano 8 speed shifter (ST-EF29)—which is normally used with derailleur gears—with my Shimano Nexus 8.

The original shifter is in poor condition and I bought the ST-EF29 for a very low price. Here's hoping it's going to work

Well, I did some more research and answered my own question! There is a big difference in cable pull between the two. So for anyone else out there who is thinking of mixing and matching, find out what the 'cable pull' is.
