  1. Yesterday, I had a whole chicken thawing, and no particular recipe in mind.
Decided to cut it up. There's one decision made. Was thinking of chicken and
dumplings, but then changed my mind and went Asian-inspired instead. I was
in a creative mood, so I didn't even glance at a recipe, just starting
    flinging things around.

Browned the chicken, then I added soy sauce, five-spice powder, and mirin.
No measurements, just to taste. Some water. Chopped onion. Than I cut up
some bok choy and threw that in, and just before it was done, I tossed in
some potstickers. Yup, that was a weird play on chicken and dumplings.
    Tasty.

Then I decided that since I was playing with ideas, might as well make a
three-bean salad. It ended up with edamame, bean sprouts and yellow wax
beans. A little thinly sliced onion. Topped with a bottled ginger-sesame
dressing I bought on impulse. Served it cold, but it would have been
    interesting warm as well.

Today, we had the leftovers, but I felt like puttering in the kitchen, so I
decided to figure out a dessert. I started some mini-graham cracker crusts.
Had some mascarpone cheese left from something else I made. Started with
that, added powdered sugar and vanilla. Added some cream cheese and a little
sour cream. Filled four of the mini crusts. Topped two of them with pine
nuts. Then I took a little more sour cream and added it to the bits of cream
cheese mixture left in the bowl. Ended up with about a teaspoon or so of the
sour cream topping for the other two little pies and that was it. Chilled
them until dinner. These were good. I'm thinking that next time some lemon
might be good, and so would chocolate. Obviously, it wasn't a traditional
cheesecake, but it was pretty tasty. And fast.

This sounds interesting and fun, although I think it's more of a play on
chicken and noodles. If you'd thrown in some bao instead of the
potstickers, THEN I think it would have been a play on chicken and
dumplings. Either way sounds innovative and potentially very good.

I saved this paragraph. I'm going to try this during the summer months.

I'm imagining this with a fresh strawberry half on top and a liqueur glass
    of Grand Marnier...

It sounds like a fantastic meal, Donna! I like the way you cook, and thanks
    for sharing your menu!

It ended up good. I actually think it was a little better the next day. If I
do it again, I might marinate the chicken first. And maybe instead of whole
chicken parts, cut it into chunks instead.

I'll definately make it again. Maybe use snap peas instead of the wax beans,
but then I'd want another color. Maybe some red bell pepper.

Hmmm...I was thinking it would look interesting with a slice of kiwi, but I
didn't have any of those lurking around. Strawberry would have been really
good. None of those around, either.
