I have just purchased my first bike with disc brakes. The front brake seems to be rubbing slightly, having spoken to some people they say this is the norm.

Does this happen alot, if so how do I fix it?

I know it is probably an easy question but being a noob, I aint to sure....

The solution depends on the brake type. Some are adjusted to position via a small alignment screw. Others have no adjustment screw and you actually fix it by repositioning the caliper on the mount. The latter are quite common in hydraulic mechanisms and really easy to manipulate. Simply flip the bike, rotate the wheel and tune the position of the caliper, it takes about 30 seconds.

discs are easy to warp too if you bump something (solution: use a clean wrench or pliers to push them back into shape) and rubbing can occur after taking the wheel out and replacing it (solution: readjust the caliper position). They offer great braking performance but can be a dog if you want them to be aligned all the time (some are better than others).
