A good read. I never believed the one about the "forks back to front"
until I saw it twice in the last few weeks.
I saw a cheap FS BSO locked up on the street with fancy forks with the
brake bosses on the back. Then I looked again. God, that's terrifying.
What must it handle like? Probably handles pretty badly with them on
the right way around, but with the trail and rake all messed up?
Saw the same thing in a branch of a large childrens toy shop chain -
half a dozen front suspension only bikes on display, all with the forks
reversed. The small number of bikes with regular forks (kids, and the
few adult bikes) were all OK.
In addition, two of them had the front and rear brake cables reversed,
and a third one, when I pulled the rear brake, the pads promptly
squeezed under the rim and went into the spokes. One of them had QR
levers, the front one of which was in the open position, but the skewer
was tight! The lever had been left open, and the handle used as a
wing-nut to twist the skewer into the nut until it was tight. Aghhhh!!
I did bring all of this to the attention of the store manager, who made
what sounded like genuine noises of concern, and they had been fixed by
the next time I visited the shop (the next weekend, only 'cause I work
nearby and my curiosity get the better of me). OK, a minor result, but
how many had gone out to unsuspecting customers like that? The mind
boggles...
