I have an early 90's model Dura Ace equipped road bike. It has 39 tooth and 53 tooth chainrings that are in need of replacement. Since 8-speed drivetrains in high end components have gone the way of the dinosaur , what can I use? Are the newer 9-speed chain rings compatible? I'd like to stick with a product with high quality materials and finish like the DA stuff.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Try Spa Cycles. The newer rings will work with your old drivetrain.

One of my bikes has 9 speed cranks with an 8 speed chain and cassette -- works fine

Another bike has 8 speed Campag cranks with 9 speed Shimano chain and cassette!! Works fine.

My 2 'good' bikes have 10 speed cranks with 9 speed chain and cassette -- works fine.

Here's Sheldon Brown's page discussing compatibilty, etc

As a matter of interest, here's all his articles :)
