Dura Ace 9 Speed Shifter has Extra Click

I have an almost new road bike with 9 speed Shimano Dura Ace
components including Dura Ace shifters. The components are 2003
vintage but have less than 1500 miles with no crashes (yet). The Dura
Ace rear shifter has an extra non-productive click at the start of the
motion. I attempt to describe the problem below as accurately and
completely as possible in the hope that someone will be kind enough to
offer their insight.

I replaced the section of rear derailleur cable housing nearest the
derailleur. I also replaced the derailleur cable since the new Dura
Ace housing was a little longer than the section it replaced. The
cable moves smoothly through the housing with no binding. I
readjusted the derailleur stops and cable tension and shifting is
quick and noise free. I am knew to road bike components, but I
regularly service/replace shifters/housing/cables on my mountain bikes
without any difficulty.

While performing the readjustment, I noticed a peculiar behavior with
the Dura Ace rear (right hand) shifter. Either the problem described
below is a consequence of my servicing, or the shifter has always
behaved as described and I simply never noticed:

Shifting from smallest cog (12) to 13 - as I start to rotate the large
Dura Ace lever (to shift from small to large rear cog), there is an
immediate click after only a tiny amount of rotation (~2 degrees), and
there is no perceptible cable pull. If I rotate the lever a second
time (or continue to the next click, about 10 degrees rotation either
way), the rear derailleur shifts normally to the 13. All subsequent
shifts to larger cogs are completely normal. With the front cover
(hiding the head of the shift cable within the shifter) removed, I
can see that there is no cable pull during the first click - the cable
moves only a tiny bit and then settles down after the click.

Shifting from 13 back down to 12 - With the chain on the 13, if I
depress the small Dura Ace lever (to shift from 13 to 12), the shift
is completed normally. If I then depress the small lever once more,
it appears to go through the full shifting motion just as when I
shifted from 13 to 12 (but with no perceptible cable release).
Subsequent pressing on the small lever is impeded as if it is now at
the limit of its motion.

Otherwise, all shifting is completely normal across all 9 rear cogs.

I sampled the Ultegra 10 speed and Dura Ace 10 speed bikes in the LBS,
and those levers did not have the extra click when starting from the
smallest cog.

I know that this complaint sounds silly, but I waited way too long to
get this bike and I want it to be perfect.

I will appreciate any comments. Thanks in advance for your time,

Phil

Thanks for taking the time to read my long post...

I thought the same thing at first, but the shifter does this even
without the shifter cable installed. The first click occurs after
just a teensie bit of rotation at the lever. Remaining clicks have
the normal amount of travel.
