Entry Level Mountain Bikes

What is are some good entry level mountain bikes in the 400-700 price range?I've never owned one and am not sure what to look for in terms of specs.Any info on specific bikes or what kind of things to look for would be appreciated.

Under $700, you're looking at some basic but rugged hardtails. I suggest something with larger wheels, 27.5 or 29. Model ranges that come to mind are Trek's Marlin, Specialized's Rockhopper, and Raleigh's Tokul and Tekoa. Each is cool in it's own way. Check them out to see which one makes you want to ride it every day.
