I should note that is with the screen off, using Strava realtime for speed and route info will use a lot more power.maydog said:Power banks are pretty cheap, I can get a ~2000mAh for $5 to $10 at the local hardware store (Menards).
Using a power bank and a run of the mill smartphone, I can run strava for more than 9 hours and still have ~50% battery capacity on the phone. That beats relying on having direct sunshine.
Hi Volnix, I don't really know the answer to that -- I'm in that "not enough experience" category. I'm going to bring a 6 watt solar panel with me if the weather forecast is for sun, otherwise I will leave it at home. I have the right sort of charge controller purchased from Adafruit Industries. All that remains is to discover whether this combination of hardware can charge up my phone while I pedal along. I'm also not certain whether rain will just give me a nice short circuit. I will see what I can do to protect the charging circuit.Volnix said:Do these solar thingies work well? Won't it be lighter/simpler to just get a power bank thingie?
Thanks a ton, Uawadall! I will see what happens this coming Saturday.Uawadall said:Good luck with your event Bob! I've only been to one(last weekend), but I had a blast!Like everyone else has mentioned, don't worry too much about supplies or getting lost. Just bring the basics, this event seems to be well organized and there will be people to assist you in a worst case scenario. You'll also have your phone just in case .
