Shhhh. Don't want to talk about that. In this newsgroup the only
information (that is accepted by alties) about conventional treatment
like Ritalin for ADHD, is negative information. Their whole purpose
here is to provide propaganda that demonizes conventional medicine
    while glorifying alternative medicine.

New calls for long-term Ritalin study

    Monday, 12 November 2001

New evidence about the effects of Ritalin, a drug used to treat children with
ADD and ADHD, has prompted renewed calls for research into its long-term
    effects.

Dr Joan Baizer and colleagues from the University at Buffalo, State University
of New York have found that relatively high doses of the drug methylphenidate,
the generic form of Ritalin, changed the expression of a gene involved in brain
function in laboratory rats. The same gene is known to be affected in humans by
other psychoactive drugs, such as amphetamines and cocaine.

The researchers presented their findings this week at the annual meeting of the
    US Society for Neuroscience.

"Children have been given Ritalin daily for many years, and it is extremely
effective and beneficial, but it's not quite as simple as a short-acting drug,"
    said Dr Baizer.

"[It] does appear to be safe when used properly, but it is still important to
ask what it is doing in the brain."

Dr Bazier and team noted that previous studies had shown high doses of
amphetamines and cocaine changed certain aspects of brain cell function.
Ritalin, like these drugs, is a stimulant, so they decided to test whether it
    might have similar effects.

Young rats were used in the experiment. One group was given sweetened milk
containing Ritalin, and their brains were compared to those of another group
    given just sweetened milk.

According to Dr Baizer, the dose used was comparable to the high end of the
dose used to treat children with ADD and ADHD, after taking into account
differences in metabolism between rats and humans.

The researchers found Ritalin increased the activity of a gene called c-fos in
the striatum, a part of the brain involved in movement and motivation.

"These data do suggest that there are effects of Ritalin on cell function that
outlast the short term and we should sort that out," Dr Baizer said.

ADHD researcher Dr Alasdair Vance of Melbourne's Alfred Hospital said the study
demonstrated the importance of studying the long-term effects of Ritalin.

"These drugs may have considerable benefits for children and families at large,
but the key issue is that our understanding of these medications — and
therefore their appropriate and optimal use — must be made a priority," he
    said.

"I am concerned about the long-term use of these drugs, given their exponential
increase in use in the community on a very insubstantial scientific base."

According to Dr Vance, children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder) and ADD (attention deficit disorder) are believed to have a problem
in the parts of the brain that integrate information from different senses.

These children lack the motivation for picking up what's important, and can't
seem to block out what's not important. Ritalin is believed to work by
increasing the amount of the nerve transmitter dopamine in these parts of the
    brain.

"While this generally benefits children with ADHD and ADD in the short term, in
the long term, such reorganisation may eventually mean the drug stops working,
or even makes the problem worse," said Dr Vance.

In some children the beneficial effects of Ritalin appeared to decline despite
continued medication, he said, adding that there is an enormous need to study
the long-term effects of Ritalin on the brains of primary school-aged children.

"Yes, there are studies that show Ritalin is effective," he said. "But they
only look at single doses, or what happens in the first three to six weeks. The
vast majority of children are on it for months to years."

The handful of longer-term studies of Ritalin use had only looked at symptoms,
    not brain physiology, he cautioned.

"We must now look at the long-term effects using juvenile animal models and
    longitudinal studies in children."

Dr Vance praised the US researchers' decision to use juvenile rats, which he
said were more relevant to the developing brains of young children.

"It's not that these drugs are bad, it's just that we don't know how best to
use them, and we need to move away from simplistic models that do not take into
account the developmental context of the child."

Great, on the road to addiction, brought to you by the AMA, the
    monopoly medicine.

"The American Medical Association is fashioned to prescribe drugs and
perform various treatments that although they may be unsuspecting,
tend to weed out the weaker species. The Council views the AMA's
'modern medicine' as barbaric. Their plans are to have mind-enhanced
health associates, like some of the USC medical and dental graduates,
who provide the new health care for the Elite, after the takeover.
Precision surgery with laser technology will make the so-called
"modern methods" of surgery obsolete. Miracle medicines and herbs
(God's pharmacy) will keep the body healthy. An understanding of the
way the electro-molecular energy field around the body operates will
allow the healthy body to be kept in perfect alignment creating
perpetual perfect health or it can be brought back into alignment
easily with the use of high-tech field variation equipment. This will
be the modern medicine of the future and upcoming doctors will be
trained in these methods in order to further the evolution of the
Elite. The Elite plan to enjoy total and complete health due to their
technology in electromagnetic fields. They also have antibodies
against the diseases they let loose and make sure they are protected.
Of course all of these findings came about by research and experiments
on unsuspecting groups of people."—Brice Taylor (Thanks For The

Is it not better not to have the drug in their system and be well, than to

Except that studies show that kids who take Ritalin for ADHD are no more
likely to become addicted to other drugs than people with ADHD who don't
    take Ritalin.

The 10 Concepts of Being Anti-Ritalin

    1. No matter what good it may do (like in helping post CVA dementia, etc.)
    it is an evil drug.
    2. It is not needed since AD/HD does not exist.
    3. It is always overprescribed, even though the evidence says otherwise.
    4. It is a bad drug because the pills make people abuse them.
    5. It causes cancer, even though the tumor is not found in humans, and the
same study showed that it seems to have a mild protective effective on
    certain types of breast tumors.
    6. It is addictive when taken as prescribed (even though there is not one

    7. Children are never helped by it.
    8. Only shills push it.
    9. Only pure-at-heart people oppose it, although the evil Kriminal Kult of
$cientology lists it first. (note that the KK$ is opposed to all psychiatric
care, incluidng medicaiton, psychiatry, psychology, etc. since they are
    business competitors).

Firstly, and I know it is semantics, but i sis one that bugs me, one cannot
suffer from anything that is potential.

Secondly, the side effects issue is way overstated, IMNSHO, and has been so
because of the scare mongering of the anti-science know-nothings (look who
oppose it in these groups). Example: there are several sceintific studies
which show that the "growth stunting" side effect is actually a growth
pattern due to the condtion. Several years ago a study showed that AD/HD
kids who were not on meds had the same delayed growth pattern as kids who
were on meds. Curiously, all of the kids grew to nearly their predicted
    height.

Jeff, I know this is hard to beleive, but Jan Drew herself posted an article
in m.h.a. a few months ago which said that kids who are not treated with
medicaiton are more likely to become addicted.

Sadly, when Jan was confronted with this astounding piece of information,
    she denied it.

Hard to justify a statement like that, given that half of US

    Now for the FACTS!

    http://www.resultsproject.net/Cocaine_Ritalin_Connection.html

If you take Ritalin as a teenager, you may not be hired to work in the US
Government in a job that involves state secretes or national security. You can
    be elected but not hired.

According to the 2000 US Military Recruitment Manual, you may not join the
Army, Airforce, Navy, or Marines if you are on Ritalin because you are a class
ll drug user. You must get a doctors note saying you've been off for 3yrs.

Insurance companies can turn you down for a pre-existing condition of Attention
Deficit or raise your rates as a schedule ll drug user.

Why would they want you to be off it for three years? What does it do to you
that the military would be worried about? Why three years, why not one or

Good question. Ask the person who made the claim.

What does it do to you
    > that the military would be worried about?

Military rules regarding medication are usually based on what would happen
if the person could not get their medication in combat. Thus, insulin
dependent diabetics do not go into the military. The question is whether a
    person can function without meds.

Why three years, why not one or
    > ten?

    See my first response.
