Yeah, I'm afraid to ride on anything other than a bike path. Sometimes this isn't an option, or convenient. But as these posts show, its our lives at stake...

You can never be totally safe on the road with cars. My main concern is with idiots that do not pay attention to their driving. Either using cell phones or playing with their radio or looking back at their kids etc. A guy was killed last November by a kid who was text messaging on his cell phone! There isn't any way a guy on a bike can protect himself from getting rear ended by someone like that. I've learned to be extra cautious in intersections and will not proceed unless I'm sure the coast is clear. Another bad deal is cars with smoked windows. I can't see them and tell if they are looking at me or not.
