I just did my first PT ride. I was able to upload and look at the data. Its a 3hr ride, 60mile, 2500+ft climbing, 30 degrees and 1 flat. Anyway, I wasn't planning to do a full out 20min test cause my training day called for an easy day. But I wanted to do a moderate 20min interval and halfway into it said what the heck and let my intensity climb. The final 5min I pushed hard and I think its a good effort to estimate FTP (for now). The last 10 minutes of the inteval were very solid. Interval started at 24min and ended at 44min. I punched interval at the start, but forgot to punch it again at the end. I ride mostly MTB, and much of my training (and racing) is on the MTB, but i want to do intervals on the road bike and PT, for quality. I am 44 and 69kilo this morning (68 is race weight). I have a good base and am starting to work on power this week (Sea Otter is goal race Apr 12), so it would be nice to have a close estimate of an FTP to get started with. Heres the file if anyone is interested in looking and giving me an estimate, and maybe any other info that the file might reveal. Thanx!

edit: The 20min interval was performed on a climb with varying inclines, mostly mild to moderate.

see Dr. Coggan's post on wattage ...

A straight-up 20-min effort isn't one of them ...

There's just no "one way" method for getting the FTP up front. Do normal training like you've been doing and just use the power data for analysis of the ride info (not using the powermeter as a guide yet). Once you've got a handful of power files to look at, you'll have a better idea.

Then, taper to race fit and do testing. There's just no better method than to test.

In the book "Training and Racing with Power", On page 50 they describe a Threshold Test that is 20min in length. The number will be about 5% over FTP.

I did a pretty good test, the part that makes me think its a little light is that the last 5minutes I was 50watts stronger then a 5minute period in the middle.

Until the weather improves I am kinda stuck on the MTB.. but thats my racing focus, so MTB is good. It was freezing rain this morning.. yuck! But I will definitely get lotsa PT files come spring. I was hoping to get a close estimate of FTP. I have some 1min intervals this week. Then a few 6min on Saturday before my first race on Sunday. So I'll get a couple interval files to add.

You can also use Monod's chart to determine the FTP (which would fall under the critical power testing of the 7 ways to determine FTP). If you're already going to be doing shorter testing this week, try doing a 2-3 minute all out, 5-6 minute all out, and a 10 minute all out. Combine this with your 20 minute effort (if you consider it your best effort), and plug the numbers into Monod's chart to get a prediction for 60 minute power.

Monod Chart here: http://velo-fit.com/articles/monod.xls

Hey Thanx! I can add my data from this weeks interval sessions with my 20min and should be in the ballpark. Appreciate it! Perry
