Flimsy Giro Headband

My GF's broke about a month ago, right at the narrowest spot on the
retention band (the same spot pictured in your link).

I think newer and/or more expensive models have a more robust band (her new
'05 Monza model seems to be stronger in that area).

This brings up a question I've been wondering about for quite some
time. I've been told that the rear retaining strap (what is the generic
name for it?) may be used to make a helmet fit that otherwise would
not. In my case, I have a wider head than many helmets fit. Most
helmets that are of my width, are too long. Elsewhere I've read that
the rear strap should never be used to make a helmet fit, that a helmet
is much less likely to stay on in a crash. The straps only purpose is
to keep a lid, that's very close to fitting, from sliding forward.
Which is it?

Btw, I have always respected anyone's right to not ware a helmet. I
don't always wear one (although I feel naked). Please let's not turn
this in to a helmet war.

I suspect the innards of Giro helmets are by design so
flimsy and cheap, with pads and straps attached with little
dabs of bad glue, etc, so consumers who don't crack them
open in a season or two are forced to scramble for
replacement parts or buy a new helmet.

Pretty damn lame piece of equipment, considering
the cost.
