Read the book also. What a nut. Built his bike using washing machine parts.

Nut or genius? Hey its just a bike afterall!!

Some of his ideas were brilliant, too brilliant. The use of washing machine parts was for the bearings. High quality bearings meant less losses, he went faster (you should see the steps the Australian track team go through now for the fastest bearings). Narrow custom BB reduced his frontal area and had a more natural stance (who siid Q factor wasn't a big deal). Simple frame was stiff enough but aero, and his arm position only looks odd because nobody else can use it due to UCI rulings against him.

Don't get me wrong, I use the term "nut" for fun and not in a condescending way.

He used the washing machine parts to get the narrow q-factor, did he not? Not because the bearings were better than standard BB ones. Narrow q-factor does not reduce the frontal area by much and is not a more natural "stance" for some -Armstrong spent sqillions on a narrow q-factor bike and found that his threshold power dropped measurably.
Obree's winning strengths were his position and his athleticism.
