Flying with bike

Hi

I live in tasmania and I am purchasing a bike when i go to melbourne on the june longweekend!

Has anyone had any experience flying with bikes? What is the best way to fly with them? I.E special bike bags?, big suit case(pull bike apart)?

Any suggestions will be appreciated!
