If you're only looking to gain 1-2 mm, you might try grinding / filing
the Shimano clamp.

I measured the Shimano derailleur clamp on the back side as 4mm thick. The
thinnest clamp that I've found so far (in the U.S.) is 2mm thick on the back
side. I can't imagine any other clamp being much thinner than that. Will the
2mm difference be enough for you?

Thanks for your help. I solved the problem by exchanging the f.d. for a unit
that comes complete with a clamp that is thinner than a f.d. with a loose
clamp. My lbs did thi sfor free, since they installed the thicker clamp for
unknown reasons when I bought the bike.
