Hey guys, I again am new to road bikes (though i have had one for quite a while). I am trying to figure out if I just need to do more adjustment or if this is the way things are with front derailleurs.

When I shift speeds from about 4 to 5 (on an 8 speed cassette), I have to shift the front derailleur over so that the chain does not rub. It happens when I am on the middle and outside rings of the crank. Is this common or can more adjustment get rid of this all together?

I have googled this trying to figure it out, but can only find how-to's as to how to adjust it, not how it should function.

Front derailer rub is fairly common. Some shifters have a trim function (like a partial shift) to eliminate the chain rub.
