Front Derailleur Chatter

Has anybody else had major problems with front derailleur "chatter"?
I posted about this before and was advised to buy a new front derailleur. Well, I finally did just that but had a real headache fitting it so it was set up properly without excessive chatter (i.e. rubbing of the chain on the actual derailleur).
Seems to me that the only way you can get rid of all the rattling is to concentrate on derailleur ideal height, angle and the way it lines up with the chain (looking from above). The other factor is cable tension which is why I fitted more expensive adjustment screws on the cables as the old ones kept seizing up. Added to that, slight turns of the screws can reduce derailleur chatter but I also found that you can adjust the rear derailleur tension and that will also affect the front derailleur.
Finally I have it working O.K. but it has taken me days of messing around, dismounting from the bike e.t.c. The problem has made life so miserable that I had no option but to simply quit training altogether till I could sort the problem out. Basically the churning, whirring and rasping was driving me so crazy.
P.S. I was knocked off my bike a few days ago by a car but fortunately I have no broken bones and the bike survived too.
