It depends. What front derailleur do you have? Is it clamp-on or a braze-on? Some--maybe not so much with recent bikes--bikes' FD braze-on don't allow a regular FD to be lowered enough to work with a compact. I think you'll find in most cases, though, that you can get a regular FD to work with a compact.

The only way to know for sure is to try it.

This can depend on a number or factors eg: bike, derailleur, chainline, cranks, BB.

But rest assured that the world will not collapse into a vortex if it doesn't work.
