Front shifting getting a little screwy

Seems like it clicks when the chain is in the middle on the front, and
the rear is on the large ring. When I move the back shifter two rings,
it stopped clicking.

Is this a situation of keeping the chain aligned as much as possible,
not getting it kinked sideways much?

Sounds like just a FD adjust is needed. Align the FD when in small ring
and biggest cog. Ensure the chain is close to the inside of the FD
cage...connect FD inner wire, tight-shift into the middle ring...not
sure if this is a MTB or road setup-MTB, one click and it ought to go
to middle ring...road setup, and it will take two clicks. shift to
smallest cog, shift into big ring, make sure FD cage outer part is
about 1mm from chain and FD cage is aligbed with chain. Use outside
limit screws for this.

Yes but...

I'm old and my expectations of shifter performance are modest. I don't actually
know if your bike can be expected to handle middle-big with grace, but let's
try.

If the outer rings work fine then you don't need to adjust the screws on the top
of the front derailleur. You'll be gently tweaking the barrel adjuster for the
cable at the shifter pod. You'll only want to give it a little more slack, like
a half turn, see if better, or too much.

Turn the front adjuster barrel a turn or 2 clockwise, if that makes it
worse, turn in the opposite direction. If neither works, the height of
the front derailer may be off (usually only a mm or 2 above the teeth of
biggest ring), or the angle (should be parallel to chain ring, but
sometimes needs to be rotated slightly).
