My cross bike has a Truvativ triple crank, and 105 shifters. I've got a strange problem. I can shift from the small ring, to the middle, and up to the big without any problem - trim clicks work, things only rub if I intentionally cross-chain. But if I try to shift from the big ring down to the middle, the cable releases with a loud POP noise, as if it were under tremendous tension, and shifts down to the little ring.
I tried the WD40 trick on the shifter, I'be tried a new cable and new housing. Nothing works. I'm struggling to understand how to fix this.

No, not toast. Just in need of an adjustment. In my experience this happens because the cable is adjusted a tad too tight, and the upper limit stopper screw has been tightened down to keep the derailleur from over shifting due to this tension. This makes for some pretty high tension on the cable and causes the "pop" release from only the front big gear. If you don't have internal cable routing, feel how much tension is on the cable when it is in the front middle, then feel the tension when you have shifted into your front large gear. You could also try backing out the upper stopper screw and seeing if it still happens.

No, not toast. Just in need of an adjustment. As Nate stated, a little less tension and maybe setting the outer limit a little further outward.
You want the cable just tight enough to pull the derailleur out to the upper limit, when the shifter is in its tightest position.

Does the shifter work w/o the FD being attached to the cable...pull a little on the cable, shift it up and down and it has intermediate clicks?
Put a small bit of slack in th cable, very small, when in the smallest ring.. Too much slack and the FD won't get all the way out to the big ring w/o rub but a wee bit of slack...another short coming of shimano triple STI road stuff.
