Perfect for the Homeless Psychopath on your Festivus list!

Matt

OK I know it's the end of the season, but I'm trying to get rid of some
stuff and have some space for my Festivus Tree
Besides, I'm still riding, aren't you?

What the heck is that supposed to mean? I think you need to lighten up
a little or your going to hate being here. Matt was making a joke.
Google LIBERATOR in this newsgroup.

Oh, and please try to reply to the bottom of the posts.

Yeah, it was in jest. But we also don't welcome FS posts here and will
generally make fun of them. So I won't tell you to sell it on eBay, but
I'd suggest you don't try and sell it here.

And no, I'm not really riding these days, it's ski (and running when I
don't have time to ski) season!

Matt

PS Festivus is all about the pole, not the tree!

I had to google it, too

Never saw the episode, but sounds pretty funny:

Thanks for the suggestions, JD and all. Notice I'm posting at the
bottom of the post now.
I didn't take the Festivus thing wrong at all, I was jokin back at ya.
:)
Festivus I thought had to do with that Seinfeld episode??

I know I gotta have thick skin on here. But I got lotsa scars on my
legs, road rash in early years,
and now trees rocks and dirt - that makes thick skin.
And I'm not a Liberaces or whatever that is either.

But I am riding, just not on the DVP right now; it's been warm a few
days here and I wanted to squeeze a few more in before I start working
out at home. I used to downhill ski and cross country back home, but
haven't tried it here yet.

I did just get a nice indoor bike trainer: kinetic. bike shop told me
they used to be around $ 600 but now I paid $ 400 taxes incl.
Do any of you guys use that or any other brand?

Ha! This will be another popular topic. You know how to pick 'em!

I haven't gone there yet (bought a trainer) but I think about it from
time to time. Right now, I just go for a ski or run, depending on
conditions and available time when it's not cycling season.

I know a bunch of people with trainers and I bet I could pick up an
older used one cheap if I wanted to go for it. I'm just not an indoor
athlete. I grew up with my parents riding on trainers all winter for
their Triathlon training. With the right movie going it could be
acceptable, but I don't know. My brother (also a triathlete) does it a
bunch, and even during cycling season so he can control more aspects of
the workout, but I'm not really like him (thankfully :)).

I used to run, on the treadmill in the winter as I broke my ankle one
winter outside; slipped on snow on top of slick ice. I was OK at
running too, 6 - 7 miles per hour for an hour if I felt good, half an
hour minimum. Outside running was a different experience, the fresh
air was some nice!

That's great you got athletes in your family. I used to run with my
younger sister; it was a good way to catch up and enjoy the outdoors.

I plan to use the indoor trainer in front of my big screen TV! a good
movie on the movie channel, the quietest trainer supposedly, and I'm
good to go. I don't like the feeling of being out of shape in the
spring, so I'll feel better over the winter too.

btw, why doesn't the subject line change on the main index screen?

I use a bunch of different brands of bikes, but no indoor trainers.
Cycling and especially mountain biking, are outdoor pursuits and
pursuing outoor pursuits indoors seems more than a little
counterintuitive.

Oh I know it's second rate, I love the outdoors ever since my dad and I
used to walk for hours every Sunday in the woods.
He loves it that I still enjoy the outdoors, even though we're
thousands of miles apart now and he's not well.
But the reason I want to keep in shape during the winter is (no, not
vanity, not so I look good in those jeans) but:
because I enjoy my rides better in the Spring when I'm not winded and
tired out.
Plus I'm generally in a better mood during the winter when I keep up
some activity.

Years ago, I bought a StairMaster type machine. Independent motion in the two
steps, has a little bar-coded effort level screen, keeps track in 4-minute
intervals.

This thing doesn't owe me a dime and I'd highly recommend it.

Probably some of the same virtues as a stationary trainer:
---------------------------------
- Minimal footprint

- No foreplay

- Reasonably quiet
---------------------------------

But I like the variety it offers. Also, if your knees get a little dicey, you
can baby them by shortening the steps you take. Get the right music, and it
seems like the optimal solution time-wise: you get on it, you do your thing,
and then you get on with life.

Pete, I don't do well with stairmasters; issues with lower back pain.
Therefore the bike is the only thing for me really.
I know $400 is alot, but I think it's well worth the $$ in the long run
- come Spring I'll be right as rain!
I'll be watching movies or listening to my new mp3 player while I pedal
away.

So JD, what do you do to keep in shape over the winter months?

When you live in an area with 320+ days of sun, palm trees, and lot's 0'
blondes I don't think he really has to worry about that. ;) Think of
the song... "You see it never rains in southern ___________."

When trails are covered here in Denver (as they are now), I've been
skiing, using the bike paths, and enjoying the views of spin class with
my $20/month Bally's membership.

Oh, 30's. Oooh! So bad.

Try a freaking blizzard here. 20F, 40 mph wind, and 24" of snow
expected. Skiing should be awesome this weekend!

DPS was closed, so my office was. Of course, that was after I got there
and the lights were out. Looks like some nice sleeping weather for the
rest of the morning.

Ooh, sounds rough! ;)
Actually 2' in the city is a huge mess. We're pretty good at dealing
with cold and snow here but the front range always amazes me with how
paralyzed they become after a good winter storm.

Are the enjoyable spin class views out the window or of the other
participants?

I almost bailed on work to ski Monarch today but they only have 9" from
this storm so far. It's supposed to keep up today so I think I'll slack
off work tomorrow for (hopefully) an even bigger day.

MmmmmPowder.

Matt
