What's amazing, IMO, is that it didn't fail completely. It
lost some pressure but still got me home. I think I know
what caused it to fail. About a month ago I got a slow-leak
flat on the rear tire, which is almost impossible to inspect
while riding. No telling how many miles I rode nearly on the
rim. Surely this contributed to the failure. BTW, this tire
served me faithfully for 1200 miles--not bad considering my
rear tire carries about 65% of my 225 pounds.
