Gear Reprt: Stan's NoTubes

I finally gave Stan's a try yesterday. Used it on Mavic 317
disc rims with Hutchinson Mosquito 2.2 tires. Stand makes it
look easy to get the tires inflated. I had a hell of time
until I used a nail gun air compressor. I just couldn't pump
fast enough to get the bead locked in. I soaped it up just
like he said, but it needed that fast blast of air. I hope
they don't lose air on the trail or I'm screwed. Once they
were inflated, I let them sit for a few days to make sure.
Yup, held air! On the trail I purposely ran through some
thorn bushes and hit a few good drops. They held up the
whole way through. My only complaint is the weird sounds the
wheels make on the trail now. Very hollow. I guess the tubes
buffer a lot of that noise. Oh well, being a little guy
(5'5") every ounce of bike weight counts, so I'll be keeping
the Stan's, but upgrading the rims.

Yeah, I liked them for a while too.

Then I had both tires fail while out on rides over the 4th
of July weekend last year and I gave them up. Good when they
work, and a huge pain in the ass when they fail.

Do what I do; pack the weight on your body. I'm 5'4", 160
and counting.

(Actually at the risk of being wrong *and* a big fat blob I
think it's mostly muscle. I've been lifting and riding a ton
recently. But how I hate my scale in the morning - why can't
I just get leaner?)

It's called belly breathing and is supposed to be very
beneficial for athletes.

You mean I'll lose fat while I gain muscle if I breath
differently?

What failed? How long were you using it?

I started on them in early May (I think).

One was a big burp that let out all my pressure and goo, and
let in a bunch of dirt and stuff. I had to put a tube in to
fix it on the trail. The other was a puncture that wouldn't
seal so I put a tube in that one too. Then I just didn't
want to mess with trying to redo the initial setup again.
