Excuse the out of place BMX question but I hope I can get good answers here. I need to crank some speed out of my son's bike. His gear ratio is 36/16 on a 16" wheel. The other kids in his class are on 20" minis with 40/16 ratios. This translates to about 2 MPH at any given pedal rate. My question is how much harder would it be to pedal if I increase the of the chainwheel 2 - 4 teeth? Is the difference going to be night and day? The freewheel can't be decreased without changing hubs. I'd like to try a gear change until I get clearance to buy him yet another bike.
